Barbering and Cosmetology Apprentice - Credentialing

Applicants must have completed high school or its equivalent, or be at least 16 years of age.

1). Obtain an Apprentice Permit

a. Contact the Department for information and application materials. This information will include details on completing an apprenticeship contract with the Dept of Workforce Development (DWD).
b. Complete the apprenticeship contract with DWD and obtain an apprentice permit.
c. Fee is $10 for the initial permit.

2. Obtain A Practitioner Credential:

a. Complete the school and practical training indicated

In order to complete apprenticeship training, applicants must have 288 training hours of instruction in theory at an approved school of barbering or cosmetology and 3,712 hours of practical training. Training must be at least 32 hours per week and be completed in not less than 2 or more than 4 years.

b. Provide verification of completion of training.
c. Pass both the written and practical examinations.
d. A credential to practice will be mailed after verification of passing both the written and practical examinations is received.

Common Denial Reason: Under age 16 and did not graduate from high school; failure to complete enough training hours; did not complete contract process with DWD.

Convictions of crimes or pending charges may be grounds for denial of license if the circumstances of the conviction or charge are substantially related to professional practice.
