Professional Counselor-Training Certificate

- Credentialing

Individuals who wish to practice professional counseling or who wish to use the title "professional counselor" must be licensed as a professional counselor or hold a temporary license or professional counselor training certificate, prusuant to s. 457.04(6) and s. 457.13 of the Wisconsin Statues.

1). The applicant must receive a master's or doctorate degree in professional counseling or its equivalent from a program approved by the Professional Counselor section.

2). The applicant must be employed full-time or have an offer of full-time employment as a professional counselor in a supervised clinical professional counseling practice.

Be employed full-time or have an offer full-time employment, as a professional counselor in a supervised clinical professional counseling practice or in a position in which the applicant will, in the opinion of the professional counselor section, receive training and supervision equivalent to the training and supervision received in a full-time supervised clinical professional counseling practice.
3). The applicant must complete and submit the application form and required documentation.

4). The board reviews the application and determines eligibility for the certificate.

5). The Board grants the certificate.

6). The candidate completes supervised training. He or she must then pass a national examination and a state jurisprudence examination to be eligible for a professional counselor certificate. (See Professional counselor)

 

Common Denial Reason: Insufficient credits in equivalent degree, does not hold appropriate master's or doctoral degree, doesn't meet post degree supervised clinical practice requirement; fail exam.

Convictions of crimes or pending charges may be grounds for denial of license if the circumstances of the conviction or charge are substantially related to professional practice.
