Dentist - Credentialing

Attention:

If you have taken the Western Regional Examination Board (WREB), please check What's New to review the Board's recent decision regarding that regional board.

If you have taken the North East Regional Board (NERB), please check What's New to review the Board's recent decision regarding that regional board.

1). Graduate from a dental school accredited by the American Dental Association Commission on Dental Accreditation.

A foreign trained dentist may qualify for a license if he or she submits to the Board evidence of graduation from a foreign dental school and evidence of the successful completion of an accredited postgraduate program in advanced education in general dentistry or an accredited general dental practice residency, in addition to meeting all other requirements for licensure.

2). Complete the appropriate application forms.

3). Pass required examinations.

 
  • Examination of a dental testing service approved by the board.

    Effective January 1, 2009 :

    The Board accepts the following examinations for dentists: CRDTS, WREB, NERB, SRTA, ADEX, and CITA. Parts I and II of ADEX are not required for WREB examinees for examinations taken on or after JANUARY 1, 2009.

    Prior to January 1, 2009 the Board accepted the following regional examinations:

    •  Northern Regional Examining Board(NERB):

     

    Effective September 28, 2005 : The Board started to accept the (NERB) examination for  Wisconsin licensure in Dentistry.  Acceptance is retroactive for 5 years from September 28, 2005.

    •  Western Regional Examining Board (WREB):

    Effective January 1, 2001: The Board started to accept WREB examination.

    Effective December 1, 2005: Applicants completing the WREB exam must also successfully complete the ADEX exam portions Part I in diagnostic and treatment planning and Part III of the mannequin examination in fixed prosthodontics. 

    Prior to December 1, 2005: WREB applicants were not required to pass ADEX portions I and III

    .

    •  Central Regional Dental Testing Score (CRDTS):

    • A state board examination administered by another state that is approved by the board.
     

    • Open book examination on the Wisconsin Statutes and Administrative Code.
     

The passing score for Dental is 88%. You will receive your exam name, password, and applicant ID which you will use as your student ID to take this test after you submit your application.

•  You cannot access the entire exam using a Mac computer.

•  You must use internet explorer as your browser.

•  Go to http://exam.drl.wi.gov

•  Select: “ test launching

•  Your instructor is “gsp”

•  If you are unable to access the exam, try again later. Refresh your internet explorer browser.

•  The answers to the exam questions are in the codebook which is free and online at http://drl.wi.gov . It may be helpful to print out the chapters from the “excerpts of the Wisconsin Administrative Code.”

•  The exam is un-timed. You may exit and return to the test any time over the next 3 months. Exit by clicking the “X” at the top right hand corner of any screen.

•  Do not click “done” until you are ready to submit the exam. If you accidentally click done before you are ready to submit your exam, just go back in and start again. Your first score will be deleted.

•  Print out a copy of your score report and retain it for your own records.

•  Additional technical or exam content-related questions can be directed to: gail.pizarro@wisconsin.gov

4). Submit completed application including all required documentation

5). Board review of application, determination to grant credential.

Check the FAQs to determine if a credential can be transferred from other States/Countries.

Biennial Renewal Due: by September 30 of odd-numbered years

Common Denial Reason: Requirements not met.
Convictions of crimes or pending charges may be grounds for denial of license if the circumstances of the conviction or charge are substantially related to professional practice.
