Applicants may be granted a credential upon review of evidence of education, examination, and experience, and a current credential from another state. Applicants may also be eligible for a temporary permit to proceed with a pending project during the time it takes to process the application for registration in Wisconsin.  Applicants may apply by using a NCEES Council Record or by direct application.

How long does it take to make a determination to provide credentials?

By law an original completed application for a credential shall be reviewed within 60 business days after having been received. An application is considered complete when all materials necessary to make a determination on the application and all requested materials have been received.

Answer:   Total processing time of an application is approximately 4 -5 weeks.   You may check the status of your application on our website click on Application Status.

How is my eligibility for the exam determined? When I am notified?

Answer:   All eligibility applications for the exam must be reviewed by the Professional Engineer Section. The Section meets every three months. Upon review of your application, you will be notified if you have been approved to sit for the exam within 2 weeks of the scheduled meeting. If you have been denied, a Notice of Denial will be sent to you about 3 weeks after the scheduled meeting.

My degree is from an institution outside of the United States.  Is this transcript acceptable?

Answer:   All education received outside of the United States must be evaluated.  The Professional Engineer Section is currently using the Center for Professional Education Services, an affiliate of the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying for educational evaluations.  Forms are provided in an online format on their website and can be processed and submitted with a credit card.  If the application data is not submitted online, there will be an additional fee.

No credit will be allowed for education submitted without an educational evaluation.

How do I know if my degree is ABET accredited?

Answer:   A list of ABET accredited degrees is available on the ABET website.

Do I need to submit the Applicant Appraisal forms with my application?

Answer:   Five Applicant Appraisal Reference forms must be submitted with the application. Three of the reference forms must be from licensed professional engineers. This is required by administrative rule and the Professional Engineer Section cannot waive this requirement.

I need to retake the exam. What do I need to submit?

Answer:   Once you have been pre-qualified to sit for exam, you do not need to resubmit an exam application to the Professional Engineer Section. However, you must schedule with Engineering Examination Services (EES), a division of Professional Credential Services each time you wish to schedule to take the exam. You may register online.

What do I need to submit once I have passed the PE examination?

Answer:  You will need to submit the Application Packet Addendum (form #2727) with any supporting documents as stated on the form.

If I have already been approved to sit for the exam, can I change the provision and apply for a credential (license) by experience only?

Answer:   Yes, you may apply for licensure if you wish. You will need to complete the Application for Professional Engineer Credential. You do not need to resubmit any information previously submitted but you will need to update your experience record. Please submit a cover letter with your application explaining that you had previously submitted an application for the examination and now wish to change your application procedure.

How do I obtain a registration seal/stamp? What address do I use?

Answer:  Any individual credentialed by the Wisconsin Examining Board of Architects, Landscape Architects, Professional Engineers, Designers and Land Surveyors is required to obtain a registration seal/stamp. A rubber stamp or embossed seal is acceptable.  Registration seals are available from most commercial printers or office supply stores.

The requirements for the registration seal/stamp may be found in sec. A-E 2.02, Wis. Admin. Code which may be found on our website.

The inner circle area of the seal must include the registrant's name, credential number (use only the numbers before the dash ie. E -11111) and the city and state where the credential holder resides or is employed.  The city and state should be the same as the mailing address that you have on file with the Department. You may use the city and state of your employment (other than your home address) if this is the same as the mailing address on file with the department.

Questions regarding the use of the seal not defined in sec. A-E 2.02, Wis. Admin. Code should be referred to the Department of Commerce, Safety and Building Division at 608-266-3151.
