1). Obtain the required
education and experience to qualify to sit for the examinations.
Applicants must have professional experience
in geologic work, as described in Wisconsin Administrative Code
GHSS 2.04, of a character satisfactory to the examining board which
demonstrates that the applicant is qualified to assume responsible
charge of geologic work. This experience shall be at least:
a) 5 years, of which at least 2 years has been performed under the supervision of a person who is registered as a professional geologist in Wisconsin, or in another state or territory or possession of the United States, or in another country that has registration requirements for professional geologists that are substantially equivalent to the requirements in Wisconsin, or any other person determined to be qualified to have responsible charge of geologic work, or,
b) 7
years, (or 6 years with an advanced degree) with a satisfactory
evaluation of the last 2 years of the experience under a peer
review system approved by the Professional Geologist Section of
the board.
One year
of experience may be granted if an individual has one or more advanced
degrees, approved by the examining board, in geology, geophysics,
geochemistry, hydrogeology, engineering geology, geotechnical engineering,
or a related geological science or a closely related field.
2). Contact
the Department of Regulation and Licensing for the eligibility application
for the examination. All new applicants must submit the eligibility
application for the examination to determine eligibility for the exam.
3). Pass
both examinations.
Applicants must pass both the
fundamentals of geology and the principles and practice of geology
examinations. In order to qualify to sit for these examinations,
applicants must have the bachelors degree as indicated above, and:
a) if planning to qualify for the fundamentals examination with 5 years of experience under "a" above, must have completed at least 4 years of the professional experience, at least one year of which must have been performed under the supervision of a person who is at the time of application registered as a professional geologist, or,
b) if
planning to qualify for the principles and practice examination
with 7 years of experience under "b" above, must have completed
at least 6 years (or 5 years in addition to obtaining an advanced
degree) of the professional experience.
Exam Dates
4). Complete any remaining education or experience required for registration.
5). Complete
the appliction for professional geologist license and provide evidence
of completion of required education and experience for board review.

Biennial renewal due by July 31 of
even-numbered years.
Common Denial Reason:
Education or experience not of qualifying quality.
Convictions of crimes or pending charges may be grounds for denial of license if the circumstances of the conviction or charge are substantially related to professional practice.
