Foreign trained physical therapy candidates must obtain verification of educational equivalency from a board approved foreign graduate evaluation service. Contact the Department for more information.

Continuing Education Requirements:

Physical therapists are required to complete at least 30 contact hours of approved continuing education during each biennial (2 year) registration period. The 30 required contact hours must be Board approved continuing education activities as described in the administrative code listing table PT 9.04.  In addition, at least 4 contact hours of the 30 must be in ethics and jurisprudence.

Important Renewal Change for Physical Therapists

Wisconsin Act 28, of the State Budget Bill has changed the renewal date.  This change occurred due to the creation of a new appropriation for all Medical Examining Board related professions.

In order for the Department to implement the “new” date, the renewal fee and continuing education hours have been pro-rated based on the beginning date of the “new” two year cycle:

Current Renewal date: 10-31-09

CE required as of 10-31-09: 30 hours

New Renewal Date: 2-28-11 (odd year)

Pro-Rated CE hours required for new renewal date: 20 hours

Please Note:  For the biennium that begins November 1, 2009 and ends February 28, 2011, only 20 continuing education contact hours are required, 4 of which must be in ethics and jurisprudence. Thereafter, the biennia will run from 3/1/odd to 2/28/odd and 30 contact hours with 4 in ethics and jurisprudence will be required.

NOTE: Does not apply to the biennium when license was first issued.

See administrative code for more details.
