Applicants who have ever
been credentialed in another state will be required to have each
state board submit letters of verification to the Wisconsin Physical
Therapists Affiliated Credentialing Board. The letters must indicate
date of birth, credential number, date of issuance, and a statement
regarding disciplinary actions. These letters will be required
in order to complete the application for licensure.
Applicants must submit
proof of completion of at least 30 contact hours of continuing
education approved by the board that were taken 2 years prior
to your application.
People Trained
Outside the United States:
Complete
appropriate application form for foreign-trained physical therapy
candidates. Verification of educational equivalency shall be obtained
from a board-approved foreign graduate evaluation service. The board
shall determine whether the applicant's educational training is
equivalent to a school of physical therapy approved by the board.
The completed evaluation from a foreign graduate evaluate service
must be submitted to the board for consideration as a candidate
for licensure.
Candidates
who are graduates of a school in a program in physical therapy in
which English is not the primary language of communication shall
take and pass the Test of English as a Foreign
Language (TOEFL) in order to qualify for a license.
Please
note: all examinations shall be conducted in the English language.
Foreign-trained
physical therapy applicants cannot obtain a temporary credential
until they are physically in the United States. Additionally, they
must have taken the TOEFL examination
and have a passing score (560) written, 220 Computer, TWE 4.5 &
TSE 50 which must be reported on an Office Score Report from TOEFL
prior to obtaining a temporary credential.
How
long does it take to make a determination to provide credentials?
By law an
original completed application for a credential shall be reviewed
within 60 business days after having been received, but the average
time for review is 30 days. An application is considered complete
when all materials necessary to make a determination on the application
and all requested materials have been received.
What
are the continuing education requirements for physical therapists?
Physical
therapists are required to complete at least 30 contact hours of
approved continuing education during each biennial (2 year) registration
period. The 30 required contact hours must be Board approved continuing
education activities as described in the administrative code listing
table PT 9.04 . In addition, at least 4 contact hours of the
30 must be in ethics and jurisprudence.
Do continuing
education hours need to include both ethics and jurisprudence topics
in order to qualify for credit under PT 9.04 (2) (c) of the Wisconsin
Statutes and Administrative Code?
As a practical
matter, these subjects tend to go hand-in-hand as it is difficult
to parse the ethical requirements from the legal ones. Consequently,
most continuing education programs typically combine the two areas.
However, it is theoretically possible to have distinctive courses
on each subject and to add the course hours together for a total
of four.
