Substance Abuse Counselor - Education

(formerly Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor, II, D)

    EDUCATION

    Substance Abuse Counselor In-Training

    100 hours of specialized education in the transdisciplinary foundations of understanding addiction, treatment knowledge, application to practice, professional readiness, and disabilities. See RL 166.02 [link].

    The training hours shall be in seminars, courses or other presentations that meet the criteria for approved precertification programs for substance abuse counselors (360 hour programs) or continuing education programs.

    Substance Abuse Counselors

    Attendance and completion of 360 hours of approved specialized education in substance use disorder counseling within a comprehensive program or a degree program approved by the department in a field with an addiction emphasis or concentration. See RL 166.03 [link]

    Department approved pre-certification programs for substance abuse counselors SAC Programs. Additional programs will be added as programs apply and are approved.

    Clinical Substance Abuse Counselor

    In addition to the above, graduation from an accredited school with an associate, bachelor, master or doctoral degree in a field of behavioral science.

    CONTINUING EDUCATION

    The department does not pre-approve continuing education programs. The department will accept for continuing education credit programs consisting of relevant subject matter taught by qualified presenters.

    The department shall approve all of the following programs and courses if they meet the requirements of RL166.05 – 166.07 [link]:

          (a) Undergraduate or graduate level courses or continuing education courses relevant to the professional practice of substance use disorder counseling, clinical supervision or prevention work offered by accredited colleges and universities, local or national professional substance use disorder association, or other professional mental health or medical health related organization.

          (b) Local or national professional substance abuse counselor related associations.

          (c) Accredited colleges and universities.

    Continuing education requirements:

    Substance abuse counselor in-training – 40 hours

    Substance abuse counselor – 40 hours

    Clinical substance abuse counselor – 40 hours

    NOTE: Continuing education requirements do not apply to the biennium in which the license was first issued.   See RL 168.01 [ link ]
