IMPORTANT NOTICE

Continuing Education for Veterinarians and Veterinary Technicians

2003 Wisconsin Act 103 established continuing education requirements for all veterinarians and veterinary technicians in the practice of veterinary medicine.

Veterinarians must now certify at the time of license renewal that they have completed 30 hours of continuing education programs or courses during the preceding two year period approved by the examining board. Veterinary technicians must certify completion of at least 15 hours.

Effective in 2007 the licensing period biennium is from 12/15/odd to 12/14/odd.

The rules specifying programs and courses that qualify for credit are currently under development. In the interim, the Board has agreed to accept programs and courses that are pertinent to veterinary medicine or veterinary technology as fulfilling the continuing education hours if they are approved by one of the following providers:

1.  A national, regional, state, or local veterinary medical or veterinary technician association.

2.  A state or federal agency.

3.  An accredited college or university.

4. An association listed in the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) or the National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America (NAVTA) directory

5. An AVMA accredited veterinary school or veterinary technician program.

6.  A program approved by the American Association of Veterinary State Boards (AAVSB) through its Registry of Approved Continuing Education (RACE) approval program.

Pesticide requirement :  A veterinarian or veterinary technician who is currently certified for pesticide use, or does not personally use or direct the use of pesticides and who does not repackage pesticides for use by others is exempt from the pesticide CE requirement. All others must include one of the hours of CE in the use, handling, distribution and disposal of pesticides.
